Sindh Graduates Association Islamabad and Theatre Wallay present the “Festival of Pakistani Mother Languages” in connection with International Mother Languages Day on Sunday, 23 February at 11:30 am. The day is celebrated all over the world in the memory of students of Dhaka University who had gathered to demand national status for their mother tongue – Bangla. Their peaceful rally was fired upon resulting in the death of a few activists. This happened on February 21, 1948. But this day is recognized by UNESCO and celebrated all over the world to mark the importance of mother languages and highlight the language rights of all humans.
Pakistan represents the diversity of a number of languages which enshrine and inherit centuries’ old rich culture of tolerance and love for humanity. However many of these languages are endangered as the state does not patronize and recognize them as national languages. Millions of speakers of these languages are continuing their struggle to assert their language rights.
Sindh Graduates Association has been celebrating this day for last many years. These events have been attended by writers, artists and intellectuals from all leading Pakistani languages. This year an organization of artists “Theatre Wallay” has joined hands with SGA to mark this day.
We will present a range of diverse voices from these languages. There will be representation of around 15 Pakistani languages. Join us and celebrate your mother tongue.
