Theatre Wallay implemented an impactful theater project, addressing critical issues like gender-based violence, child marriages, and sexual and reproductive health. Supported by the School of Leadership Foundation and UNFPA Pakistan, the project centered around the play ‘Baat Karo Bhai Baat Karo,’ which was performed in 10 districts across Pakistan, including Rawalpindi, Swabi, Khairpur, Sukkur, Larkana, Lasbela, Multan, Bahawalpur, Charsadda, and Swat.

From October to November 2023, 21 performances took place, each followed by engaging discussions that allowed audiences to delve deeper into the highlighted social concerns. The play’s adaptability to various venues—from schools and universities to community centers—ensured it reached diverse and remote communities, even those without electricity.

The play received overwhelmingly positive feedback, particularly from women experiencing live theater for the first time. The central character, portrayed by Faizan Asad, used local accents to resonate with Pashtoon, Punjabi, and Sindhi cultures, enhancing the play’s connection with audiences.

Post-performance discussions revealed intriguing insights: younger audiences wanted their parents to see the play, while older audiences recommended it to their children, showcasing its cross-generational appeal.

The performances were part of the Hifazat campaign by UNFPA Pakistan and SoLF, launched to raise awareness about reproductive health and social norms. Premiering in Rawalpindi, the play was met with applause, and many highlighted the importance of discussing reproductive health and child marriage with elders and children alike. The interactive post-performance sessions provided a platform for community members to engage in these vital conversations.

Directed by Safeer Ullah Khan, with Fizza Hasan as Artistic Director, the play featured a talented cast including Imran Iftikhar, Tayyab Ali, Iqra Altaf, Anum Arooj, Faizan Ahmed, Azam Hameed, and Faizan Asad.

This initiative underscores the power of theater in sparking dialogue and raising awareness about pressing social issues, bridging generational gaps, and fostering community engagement.
